EXT. BERK - DAY
Hiccup and Toothless race through the forest, twisting and swooping to avoid the trees without losing speed.
HICCUP
Yeah!  Come on, Bud!  Here we go, Buddy!  Come on, Toothless!
Happy and determined, they fly higher, zipping around a flag post atop a cliff.
HICCUP
Yeah!
Inside the training academy, Astrid watches in excitement.
ASTRID
Here they come!
Fishlegs marks a sundial with a piece of chalk.  Hiccup and Toothless race past the academy, past another flag post on a small rock outcropping at sea.  Fishlegs adds a second mark.
HICCUP
Let's go!
They circle back around to the academy, as Fishlegs tallies a third mark.
FISHLEGS
Yep!  It's a new course record.
He turns to see them swoop through the open gate, landing fast, but easily.  Hiccup jumps breathlessly from Toothless back, stroking the dragon's head.
HICCUP
So?  How'd we do?
FISHLEGS
Technically you're still the fastest, but someone, and I won't mention who, is gaining significant ground.
He edges forward, chalk and record book still in his hands.
HICCUP
What?
Hiccup and Toothless narrow their eyes, suspiciously, darting their gaze to clunking sound.  The twins disengage their current fight long enough to deny it's them.
TUFFNUT
Don't look at us!
Hiccup turns to Astrid, who pauses from petting Stormfly to raise a challenging eyebrow at him.  Hiccup shakes off his shock, scratching Toothless on the head and trying to understand this new information.
HICCUP
How can that be?  How can Toothless be getting slower?
Fishlegs closes the gap, pointing to the open pages of his book.
FISHLEGS
He's not.  Stormfly's getting faster.
They turn to Astrid, still busy tending to Stormfly.
HICCUP
Oh really?
He gestures to her, friendly, but competitive and curious about her new tactic.
HICCUP
Is that so?  Anything you'd like to share, Astrid?
She turns, playfully antagonizing him, while Stormfly mimics agreeably behind her.
ASTRID
Let's just say I'm experimenting with what she eats.  Apparently, it's working.  And making you mad!
She smiles smugly.  Stormfly looks puzzled, making some strange gurgling sounds, then letting out loud burp followed by a burst of flame.  Before the conversation can go any further, Snotlout appears, laughing and cheering excitedly.
SNOTLOUT
Woo!  Haha!  Woo!
He lands inside the arena, eager to share a discovery with the others.
SNOTLOUT
You will not believe what I just found!
Immediately, the twins set to guessing, bouncing ideas off each other enthusiastically.
TUFFNUT
A severed head?
RUFFNUT
Our cousin Lars?
TUFFNUT
Our cousin Lars' severed head?
Fishlegs runs forward, a bit panicked at the suggestion.
FISHLEGS
Lars died?
They turn to him, upset and wanting to know where he'd gotten that idea from.
TUFFNUT
Who said that?
Irritated, Snotlout pulls the attention back to himself.
SNOTLOUT
Um, excuse me?  Do you guys want to see this?  Or not?
EXT. BEACH - DAY
The five dragons land on a beach, each of their riders hopping off to follow Snotlout to the remains of a small, crashed ship.
TUFFNUT
Huh.  A wrecked boat on Berk?  Yeah, there's something new.
He pauses, clearly disappointed with the big surprise.  Ruffnut eyes him agreeably.  Snotlout ignores him, continuing forward and pausing at the wreck to remind the others it's his find.
SNOTLOUT
Just remember, I saw it first, so it's mine.
He crouches beneath the hanging sail, waving at the others to do the same, pointing to reveal a sleeping teenage girl.
TUFFNUT
Whoa!  Now I like the boat.
Now impressed, Tuffnut rubs his chin, while the others look at her in concern.  Snotlout turns to them, possessively reiterating his previous claim.
SNOTLOUT
Remember, I get to keep her!
Astrid motions to him in disgust.
ASTRID
Snotlout!  It's a person!
He doesn't take that the way it was intended, only becoming more elated.
SNOTLOUT
Right?  How lucky is that?
Hiccup moves things along, crawling forward and lightly shaking the girl's arm.
HICCUP
Eh, hey.  Hey there.
She stirs, groggily touching her head, before taking notices of the others and scurrying back on her hands in terror.  She cowers fearfully against the boat.  Gently reaching forward, Hiccup tries to calm her.
HICCUP
It's okay!  We're friends.
She watches briefly in confused suspicion, but a coughing jag gets the better of her.
HEATHER
(hoarsely)
Do you have any water?
Without hesitation, a hand with a cup shoots out.  Another cup knocks it away, as Tuffnut fights for her to take his water instead of Snotlout's.  Behind them, Fishlegs knocks Tuffnut to the ground with a cup of his own.  Snotlout gives Fishlegs a derisive look, then knocks him out of the way.  He smiles graciously at the girl, holding out the last remaining cup.
SNOTLOUT
Allow me.
HEATHER
Thank you.
With a hint of a smile, she takes a long, much needed drink.  Looking away, she wipes her mouth, the confused sadness creeping back in as she hands the cup back.
HEATHER
W-Where am I?
HICCUP
This is Berk!
He offers a genuine smile, while Tuffnut and Snotlout continue staring, lovestruck, into the wreckage.  Toothless shoves past them, curiously creeping forward toward the stranger.  She cowers again, instinctively covering her face.
HICCUP
Uh do-don't be afraid!  He won't hurt you.
He pushes Toothless away and motions for the girl to come out as well.
HICCUP
Hey!  Come out.  It's okay.
She crawls forward on her hands and knees, and peeks out of the cover, watching Hiccup calm Toothless.
HICCUP
Easy, bud.
Toothless settles easily and they both turn to smile at the girl.  She stares back in astonishment.
HEATHER
How did you do that?
Snotlout interjects, cocky and unimpressed.
SNOTLOUT
That?  That's nothin'.  Watch this.  Hookfang, get your butt over here!
He makes a great show of his dominance, yelling and pointing at his dragon.  Hookfang perks up, looks at him like he's stupid, and flies away.  Snotlout darts his eyes to the girl, laughing nervously.
SNOTLOUT
Heh heh heh.  He'll be back.  Jokester.
With the opportunity to save face, he turns to her more fully and arrogant once again.
SNOTLOUT
Oh!  And just so you know, I'm the one who rescued you.
HICCUP
And I would be Hiccup.
He steps in, gesturing to himself.  To Snotlout's dismay, the girl turns her attention to Hiccup, smiling and introducing herself.
HEATHER
Heather.
Wanting to know what this is all about, Astrid cuts in.
ASTRID
So, Heather...  What happened to you?
Sadness washes over Heather as she begins her story.
HEATHER
My family and I were on our way home to our island when our boat was attacked by pirates.
Tuffnut excitedly cuts her off.
TUFFNUT
I wanna be a pirate!
The others turn to gawk at him, so he retracts, toning it down a notch.
TUFFNUT
Or a fish cleaner.  I'm still on the fence.
As he considers his options, the others turn back to Heather, ready for the rest of her story.
ASTRID
Ehem!  You were saying?
HEATHER
They attacked our boat and took us back to our island, laying siege to it.  I was able to escape, but my mother and father--they weren't so lucky.
She shrugs, defeated and paces past the group to stare out at the sea.  She hangs her head in sorrow.  Tuffnut angrily changes his mind about the life of piracy.
TUFFNUT
Stupid pirates!  I'm definitely gonna be a fish cleaner!
Hiccup puts a comforting hand on her shoulder and tries to assure her things will work out.
HICCUP
Hey, everything's gonna be okay.  My dad's the chief.  We'll figure something out.
Hand still on her shoulder, he leads her away.  The others follow, excepting Astrid, who watches in a mix of jealousy and suspicion.  Something about the story didn't seem right to her, so she ducks under the sail and glances around for anything out of place.
EXT. BEACH - AFTERNOON
The twins and Fishlegs fly away.  Heather is seated behind Hiccup on Toothless, and Astrid quickly hops on board Stormfly.  She calls a reminder to Hiccup.
ASTRID
Hey, don't forget we're meeting tomorrow to work on our times.  Unless you want Stormfly to be the fast one in the Book of Dragons.
HICCUP
Yeah, that's definitely not gonna happen.  We will be there.
Astrid takes off, and Hiccup turns briefly to Heather, making sure she's ready before they do the same.
HICCUP
Okay?
They trail behind, Heather's unfamiliarity with flying evidenced by her nervous cries.
HEATHER
Whoa!
From the beach, Snotlout watches the others leave, realizing too late that Hookfang still hasn't returned.
SNOTLOUT
Uh?  Can I get a ride from someone?
EXT. HADDOCK HOME - NIGHT
Inside the house, Hiccup leads Heather up the stairs to his room.
HICCUP
Alright, just this way.  Watch your step.  And, here we are.
Toothless is sprawled out on his bed, and warbles amicably as Heather enters the room.
HEATHER
It was nice of your father to let me stay here.
Heather steps forward and smiles gratefully.
HICCUP
Well, until we can find you a safe place to go, consider Berk your home.
Hiccup holds his hands up in welcoming, but Heather's attention is snatched away by something else.
HEATHER
Wow!  What are these?  They're really cool!
She gestures to his blueprints on the wall, genuinely interested.  Hiccup is thrilled to explain them, pointing to the large drawing of a tail for Toothless.
HICCUP
New saddle for Toothless!  We're trying to get some extra speed so we can stay on top of Astrid and Stormfly.  Astrid's very competitive.
Heather glances from the drawing to Hiccup, then away, as an awkward silence follows.  Hiccup seems to realize that may have been an odd thing to say.
HICCUP
Okay, so, uh, do you need anything?  Some warm yak milk?  A nice fish stew?
He backs away, covering the awkwardness with more awkwardness.  Heather giggles, appreciatively.
HEATHER
No.  But thank you, Hiccup.  I'm really tired.  It's been a long day.
Her smile fades and Hiccup reaches the edge of the stairs.
HICCUP
Right!  Okay, uh, come on, Toothless.  We're sleeping downstairs.
He turns to the steps, motioning Toothless to follow.  Heather pulls back, still unaccustomed to Toothless as he passes her.
HEATHER
Hey, Hiccup?
Already part way down the stairs, he whips his head around at the sound of his name.
HICCUP
Yes?
She shrugs lightly and smiles.
HEATHER
Thanks.
HICCUP
Sleep well, Heather.
Smiling back, he continues down the stairs, leaving Heather alone in his room.
EXT. BERK - NIGHT
Inside her little barn, Stormfly greedily gobbles a large barrel of food, while Astrid lugs over another heavy basket.
ASTRID
That's it, girl.  Finish up your chicken.  By the time Hiccup figures out this is what's giving you all that energy, he'll be eating our dust!
Stormfly flips the chicken into her mouth, as Astrid talks to her, clearly impressed with the new results.  The dragon jerks her head up at a strange sound, startling Astrid.  Heather watches from the shadows as Astrid looks around.
ASTRID
What is it, girl?
Astrid wanders out a few steps, trying to see in the darkness, before turning back to Stormfly to tell her to stay.
ASTRID
You stay here.
Stormfly turns back to her chicken, while Astrid creeps in to town, sneaking and ducking behind houses.  She whirls toward a sudden movement behind her and catches someone running through the village.
ASTRID
Hey!
She chases the shadow momentarily, but stops, caught off guard as she recognizes her.  Narrowing her eyes in suspicious confusing, Astrid watches her run away.
ASTRID
Heather?
EXT. FORGE - MORNING
Hiccup is awake, laboriously hammering at a piece of metal.
HEATHER
You're up early.
He stops, smiling at the voice, as Heather steps into the forge.  Abandoning his hammer, he turns to her, still smiling.
HICCUP
Yeah.  Just wanted to get the jump on this.
The saddle he'd been working on sits on a wooden horse and she examines it carefully, offering a few ideas of her own.
HEATHER
You know, with a shorter connecting rod, it'll push you back in the saddle and make you more streamlined.
His eyes brighten, and he reaches a pair of tongs into the fire pit, plucking out the molten rod for inspection.
HICCUP
Which will increase our speed!  Yeah!  Awhaha!
Excited and impressed, he realizes she's right.  He turns to Toothless, who lifts his head and thumps his tail happily.
HICCUP
You hear that, bud?  Stormfly's gonna be seeing a lot more of your tail.
Heather laughs and turns back to Hiccup, eager see how it works.
HEATHER
So, when can we test it out?
Just as excited as she is, Hiccup is ready to get started.
HICCUP
How about right now?
The rod sizzles, dunked in a pail of water.
EXT. CLIFF - DAY
Perched on Stormfly's back, Astrid waits on a small cliff.  Her dragon's squawks mirror her own evident impatience as she looks around, tired of waiting.  An excited squeal meets her ears and her eyes widen.
HEATHER
Woo!  Yeah!
Toothless races past, with Hiccup and Heather on his back.  Stormfly turns and Astrid follows them with her eyes, watching in astonishment.  They continue their flight, happy and laughing, while Astrid's surprise turns into irritation.
ASTRID
You have got to be kidding me.
EXT. DRAGON ACADEMY - DAY
Inside the arena, Fishlegs has a large branch deep inside Meatlug's ear, while the twins loll about, using Barf and Belch as chairs.
FISHLEGS
Oh ho!  She loves getting her ears cleaned!  I know just the right spot.
Hookfang makes a great show of agitated pacing, and blows a small burst of fire at Snotlout.  Snotlout's own nerves seem worn thin and he shouts in frustration.
SNOTLOUT
Hookfang!  Will you just calm down?
The dragon blows another puff of smoke through his nose, then turns away.
SNOTLOUT
Are we training?  Or not?
Astrid's staring angrily at the sky, when Fishlegs chimes in behind her.
FISHLEGS
Hey, where's Hiccup?
She points in disgust at the black dragon just above the arena.
ASTRID
Giving a private lesson.
Fishlegs misses the point, brightening visibly.
FISHLEGS
I didn't know he gave private lessons!  Can anybody get in on that?
Astrid continues glaring at the sky.
ASTRID
Apparently, just her.
Amused, Ruffnut sits and smiles mischievously.
RUFFNUT
Uh oh!  Looks like there's another hen in the rooster house.
Still lying on his dragon, Tuffnut lazily repeats his sister.
TUFFNUT
Uh oh.  Yeah.  Another rooster in the hen house.
He bolts up right, realizing he has no idea what Ruffnut means, but wanting to.
TUFFNUT
Wait, what?
Astrid shifts her glare to Ruffnut, over exaggerating her denial, then wandering to scratch Stormfly instead.
ASTRID
Nothing.  She thinks I'm jealous, which is completely ridiculous.
Tuffnut grins, still trying to piece things together, then becomes confused over his role in the current situation.
TUFFNUT
Oh, right, right.  Wait.  Of who?  Me?  Wait, am I the rooster or the hen?
Astrid turns back, again refuting any claim of jealousy, just as Hiccup and Heather drift through the open gate.
ASTRID
Trust me.  The last thing I am, is jealous.
They land and climb off, Hiccup cheerfully greeting the others, while Heather twirls around, taking in the academy.
HICCUP
Top 'o the morning, class!  How's everyone doing today?
Leaning against Stormfly, Astrid glowers, making it clear that Hiccup screwed up.
ASTRID
(sarcastic)
Oh!  Nice of you to show up!
Hiccup is genuinely confused, before remembering their plans and slapping his palm to his face.
HICCUP
What?  Oh, we were supposed to meet up.  I'm so sorry.
Astrid stares, unimpressed, while Stormfly voices her displeasure with a squawk.  Snotlout and Ruffnut watch in amusement, while Tuffnut remains deep in thought.
SNOTLOUT
Awkward!
The puzzle clicks into place and Tuffnut is clearly proud of himself.
TUFFNUT
Oh, Astrid's jealous of the pretty one, right?
He turns to his sister for approval and she nods, but it quickly turns into eye-rolling when Tuffnut questions her metaphor.
TUFFNUT
Why talk about hens and roosters?
Smiling antagonistically, Astrid turns her attention to Heather.
ASTRID
So, Heather?  Sleep well?
Not missing a beat, Heather answers, dripping with sweetness.
HEATHER
Very well.  Thank you, Astrid.
She catches Astrid's harsh scowl, but turns away, instead appealing to Hiccup.
HEATHER
So...  This is it?  Your dragon training academy.
Tuffnut jumps to correct her.
TUFFNUT
No.  Our dragon training academy.  Remember--I called you the pretty one.
Ruffnut's nod of approval turns to revulsion at the thought of her brother calling someone the pretty one.  Hiccup picks up from there, explaining the purpose of the academy.
HICCUP
We've been training the dragons to become part of our everyday lives.
Fishlegs proudly scurries forward, holding out the Dragon Manual.
FISHLEGS
And it all goes right in here.
Heather looks deeply interested at the book.
HEATHER
Really?  Everything?
Wanting to impress, Fishlegs leans in dramatically.
FISHLEGS
Mmm, yep.  I'm kind of the log keeper.  Log master, really.
He raises an eyebrow and shifts his helmet, but Snotlout quickly smacks him out of the way.
SNOTLOUT
He writes down what Hiccup tells him to.
Fishlegs pushes Snotlout's arm away, not yet ready to give up his attempt at being suave.
FISHLEGS
I give it my own spin, thank you.
Heather smiles, anxiously holding out her hands.
HEATHER
Can I see it?
Just as he's holding out the book, Astrid angrily lunges forward and snatches it away, turning her back to Heather, while the boys stare, nonplussed and a bit fearful.
ASTRID
I'll take that, thank you.  Excuse us.
She claps Hiccup on the shoulder and ushers him away to talk in private, while Heather watches.  Fishlegs immediately returns to beaming at Heather, while Snotlout slides to her other side.  Hiccup looks annoyed as Astrid pushes him into the doorway of an old cage.
ASTRID
Hiccup, I don't think we should be showing her all our dragon secrets.
Despite the urgency of her appeal, Hiccup shrugs off her concerns.
HICCUP
Astrid, it's fine.
Astrid tries again, desperately wanting him to see the potential threat Heather poses, but without any clear evidence, all she can voice is her own distrust.
ASTRID
I just don't trust her.  You shouldn't either.
Hiccup rolls his eyes, annoyed and ready to get back to the group.  Asserting his authority, he snaps irritably at Astrid.
HICCUP
Well, I do and you should trust me.
He stalks back to the group, leaving Astrid hurt and disappointed.  Astrid watched Heather beam as he rejoins the group, and narrows her eyes, trying to figure out exactly why the other girl is so unsettling.
EXT. BERK - DAY
Heather stands before Fishlegs and Meatlug.
HEATHER
So, Mr. Fishlegs, "Log-Master of the Book of Dragons"--I can call you that, can't I?
FISHLEGS
Absolutely.
HEATHER
Tell me, what would one find in the book of dragons about the... Magnificent Gronkle?
Fishlegs adopts a knowledgeable attitude and walks over to a resting Meatlug.
FISHLEGS
Well, the Gronkle is a member of the boulder class of dragons.  Fourteen feet long,
(picks up Meatlug's wing)
eighteen foot wingspan, five-thousand seven hundred and twenty four pounds of
(hugs Meatlug)
pure love.
FISHLEGS
(to Meatlug)
Come on, girl, don't be shy
HEATHER
She's so cute! But how does she perform in battle?
FISHLEGS
Well feel her skin.
He steps back as Heather approaches and allows her to rest a hand on Meatlug's nose.
FISHLEGS
It's thick.  Impenetrable. Like armor.
Heather gives an agreeable hum.  Fishlegs moves around to the back of Meatlug, picks up a rock and throws it at her to further prove the thickness of her hide. The rock bounces off her back and strikes Fishlegs in the face.
FISHLEGS
AH! It's also quite springy.
HEATHER
What about her tail?  It looks like it could be a weapon.
FISHLEGS
Oh, it is.  Tough, bulbus, deadly.
(lifts Meatlug's tail)
It can even be used as a blugeon.
HEATHER
Oooh!  She sounds so fierce.
Fishlegs drops the tail and moves back up to Meatlug's head.
FISHLEGS
Oh, she's feirce alright--on the outside. But on the inside-
(baby voice)
-she's as soft as a bed of rose petals.
(hugs Meatlug's head again)
Aren't you my little baby?
EXT. HOOLIGAN HARBOR - DAY
Heather is at the docks in Hooligan Harbor.  She sits atop Belch's head and Tuffnut is atop Barf.
HEATHER
So, Tuff, tell me how this works again?
TUFFNUT
Okay, you yank on his head, he barfs up this really nasty gas, and I spark it.  But, don't breathe it in.
HEATHER
Why not?
Tuffnut wags his finger.
TUFFNUT
You don't want to know.  Just give me the signal.
HEATHER
What's the signal?
TUFFNUT
Ah... man, I always forget that.
He knocks his fist against his helmet a couple times trying to remember.
HEATHER
How 'bout: fire?
TUFFNUT
Wow, you're really good at this.  Much better than my sister who... I can easily get rid of by the way. I mean, easily.
He gives a small chuckle and directs Barf's head to lean in closer to Heather.
TUFFNUT
She looks a lot like me.  Sometimes I impersonate both of us.
Heather's polite smile becomes strained.
HEATHER
Yeah. Why don't we focus on the task at hand?
Tuffnut pulls Barf back into firing position.
TUFFNUT
Right. Okay. Ready?
HEATHER
Ready.
Both heads are now poised at the target shield floating in the harbor waters.  From the left a ship slowly approaches.
TUFFNUT
Signal! Ugh, darn- I mean, FIRE!
Heather pulls on her head just as Tuffnut pulls on his.  The heads fire fire just as a ship passes behind the intended target.  The ignited gas ball strikes the ship instead.  The vikings aboard scream and abandon ship.
Heather is horrified.
HEATHER
What do we do now?
Tuffnut is smiling.
TUFFNUT
Usually we hide... until the chief finds us.  Then we get in trouble.
Barf lowers his head to the ground with Tuffnut chuckling all the way down.
EXT. BERK - DAY
Outside the Jorgenson house Heather pets Hookfang's snout. Snotlout stands at the side with his arms crossed over his head.
HEATHER
I have to say Snotlout, your dragon really is the most impressive.
SNOTLOUT
(dismissive)
Yeah, I know. So lets talk about you and me. You never did get to thank me for saving your life.
He saunters up to her with a direct air of expectation.  Heather gives him a polite smile.
HEATHER
You're right. Thank you snotlout.
(attention to Hookfang)
So, how much does he weight exactly?
SNOTLOUT
Well, him? Five thousand pounds give or take.  He's Monstrous.  Remember? Sort of like his rider so... heh. Tour of the island, you and me, what do you say?
HEATHER
Actually, Hiccup took me on Toothless. It was beautiful.
She passes him. Snotlout stares after her, looking affronted.
Heather runs a hand along Hookfang's wing. A squelching noise comes from under her palm.
HEATHER
So Snotlout, how does this whole fire-thing work with Hookfang?
SNOTLOUT
(impatient)
It's a spit. It coats his whole body. That's what lights him on fire, okay?
(suave)
Between you and me?
He swipes some of the 'spit' from Hookfang's coat and begins to rub it on his body.
SNOTLOUT
I use it on date-night.  The ladies seem to love the smell.
Heather takes another sample from Hookfang's scales with the swipe of her hand and rubs it between her fingers.
HEATHER
Can he flame up on command?
SNOTLOUT
Oh, he can. But he won't.
(muttering)
Pig-headed dragon.
Hookfang hears this and casually turns his head to his rider. He breaths a flame right at Snotlout's bottom.  Heather gasps.
The sound of something sizzling can be heard and smoke rises from behind Snotlout.  He gives Heather a false smile.
SNOTLOUT
(nervous chuckling)
Could you give me a minute?
He runs to a nearby water trough with smoke still rising from his back end.
SNOTLOUT
(hysterical shouting)
Just one minute!
Snotlout gives a great jump and lands bottom-first in the trough.
HEATHER
Take as much time as you need!
EXT. HADDOCK HOUSEHOLD - DAY
Hiccup is outside his home adjusting the rigging on Toothless's updated saddle.
HICCUP
There we go bud.
(muttering)
Oh, that's gonna work perfectly.
From inside the house, Heather peaks outside to ensure that Hiccup is distracted. Confident that she has time alone, she shuts the door.
Heather creeps up the stairs to Hiccup's loft and begins to search the room.  She roots through his satchel, looks inside his closet, and finally peeks under his bed.  She gives a relieved sigh when she finds the Book of dragons.
HEATHER
(whispering)
Gotcha. The Book of Dragons.
She sits against the bed, the book in her lap, and cautiously looks over her shoulder to make sure she still has privacy.  Assured, she begins to flip through the book.
HEATHER
Monstrous Nightmare.. the Gronkle...
(stops on a page)
Here we go. The Deadly Nadder.  Peircing spines, loyal, powerful...
ASTRID (O.S.)
Intelligent.  And, of course, deadly.
Heather gasps at the unexpected voice and turns around. Astrid stalks into the room with her hands on her hips.  She looks livid.
ASTRID
(sharply)
What do you think you're doing?
INT - HICCUP'S ROOM - SUNDOWN
Heather faces Hiccup and Astrid, having been caught red-handed with the Book of Dragons. Astrid has her arms crossed and appears in an ill mood. Hiccup stands between the two girls.  The Book of Dragons is under his arm, back in his possession.
ASTRID
(aggressive, to Heather)
Well, are you gonna say something?
HEATHER
(to Hiccup)
I am so, so sorry Hiccup.  I was cleaning up your room and I-I found the book.  I couldn't help myself.
Hiccup's expression softens.
HICCUP
It's okay, Heather.
Astrid immediately jumps in his face.
ASTRID
It's okay?  What do you mean 'okay'?  She's reading the Book of Dragons.
HICCUP
Astrid, come on. Lighten up.
ASTRID
(affronted)
Me?
(gestures to Heather)
She's the one sneaking around!  Looking at... our stuff!
HICCUP
(confused)
Really?  Sneaking around?  What... what are you talking about?
ASTRID
(pointedly to Heather)
I'm talking about last night.  Near my house...
HEATHER
That was me.  I couldn't sleep so... I went for a walk.  I was having terrible nightmares.
HICCUP
(sympathetic)
I can imagine.
Astrid looks between the two in disbelief.
ASTRID
Is this really happening?
Hiccup loses his patience with Astrid's strange aggression.
HICCUP
Okay, Astrid, that's enough.
ASTRID
You're right, Hiccup.  It is.
She stalks out of the room and down the stairs.
Hiccup turns back to Heather.
HICCUP
I'm sorry about that.
HEATHER
No.  I'm sorry.  I was wrong to look at your book.
HICCUP
It's no big deal.  I trust you.
Hiccup puts the book back under his bed. Heather follows his actions with her eye.  A smile comes to her lips.
EXT - HOFFERSON HOUSEHOLD - NIGHT
Heather approaches Astrid's sleeping Nadder in the dead of the night.  Stormfly is resting in the open barn adjacent to the Hofferson house.  She opens her eyes after sensing Heather.
HEATHER
(cautious)
Approach the Deadly Nadder slowly.
Heather continues to step forward with her hands raised.  Stormfly rears up with a roar.  She spins, points her tail in Heather's face, and brandishes her spines.
Heather jumps.
HEATHER
Spines. Just like the book said.
Determined, Heather continues to approach while rooting around in her bag.
HEATHER
Stay in the blind spot...
She pulls a chicken leg from the satchel and holds it out to Stormfly.  The Nadder sniffs it and calms down.
HEATHER
I hear you like that.
The spines retract.  Stormfly gives the leg another sniff, chirps, and takes the offering.  As Stormfly chews, Heather reaches forward and places a hand on her nose.
ASTRID (O.S.)
(furious)
What are you doing with my dragon?
Heather turns, sees Astrid standing the the doorway to the barn, and glares.  She huffs and puts her hands on her hips.
HEATHER
(annoyed)
You really like to sneak up on people.
Astrid walks up to her.
ASTRID
Only the ones who deserve it.  And don't give me your innocent routine.
HEATHER
(casually)
I wouldn't think of it. You're way too smart for that Astrid.
Stormfly nudged Heather in the back, seeking more chicken.  Heather turns, cups Stormfly's face and begins to stroke her nose.  She smiles at Astrid as she does so.  Astrid glowers.
With a final pat to the Nadder's nose Heather leaves the barn.  As she passes Astrid she pauses and leans in.
HEATHER
I think your dragon likes me.
(to Stormfly)
See you later stormfly.
Astrid doesn't stop Heather but her anger is clear.  Her expression becomes more pained once Heather is gone.  She looks up at her dragon.
ASTRID
Really?  Where's the loyalty?
HADDOCK HOUSEHOLD - NIGHT
From the loft we see Hiccup and Stoick clearing dinenr dishes from the table.  Heather watches them from the top step and quickly retreats back into Hiccup's room.  She leans down to look under Hiccup's bed but the book is gone.  Heather gasps.
HEATHER
(whispering)
No, no, no!
She looks downstairs again. Hiccup has the book. He flips through it by the candle light and adds details to the illustrations.
HEATHER
(under breath)
Great.  Now what?
EXT - BERK'S FOREST - NIGHT
Astrid is in the forest late at night with her axe taking her frustrations out on the tress.
ASTRID
Heather!
She throws her axe with the name.  It swings through the air and lodges itself into a tree.  Astrid moves to retrieve it.
ASTRID
(Mocking)
I think your dragon likes me.
With a growl she yanks her axe from the tree.
ASTRID
No one messes with me and my friends.
A twig snaps. Astrid immediately leans against the tree she stands near. She sees Heather sneak past.
Astrid silently follows her, keeping behind trees.  Heather stops at the beach.  She stares out into the ocean before she takes a seat on a washed up log.
Astrid watches her sit for a minute and quickly becomes bored.
ASTRID
This is stupid.
Just as she turns to leave she hears a grunt and sees something in the ocean.  She narrows her eyes.
ASTRID
Wait...
A ship decorated with spiked shields pulls onto shore.  It rocks as a Viking jumps out of it and onto the beach.
ASTRID
That's an outcast boat!
The Outcast walks across the beach and stops in front of Heather.
Astrid leans back, shocked.
ASTRID
Savage...
Savage sneers down at Heather.
SAVAGE
What have you learned about the dragons?
Heather becomes more timid and fidgety.
HEATHER
I've learned alot, Savage. But there's something else. Something that's going to make Alvin very happy.
SAVAGE
I'm listening.
Astrid narrows her eyes and leans closer.
HEATHER
They have a book. A book of dragons. It's got everything in it. Everythign Alvin could hope to learn about controlling dragons.
SAVAGE
Where is this book?
HEATHER
I don't have it.  But, I will! I promise. I just, I just need a little more time.
Savage takes a couple steps forward. He looks imposing.
SAVAGE
Alvin isn't known for his patience!  He won't be happy having to wait.
HEATHER
(desperate)
Please! You have to trust me!  When I get back to Outcast Island with that book, the wait will be worth it.
Distracted by what she hears, Astrid leans a little too forward and knocks over some loose rocks from the dirt bank she's hiding behind.
Astrid throws herself against a nearby stone wall and hides in the shadows.
Heather glances back to the source of the noise and then returns her attention to Savage.
HEATHER
(whispers)
I better go.
She scurries away from Savage.  The Outcast glares out across the beach toward the suspicious noise.
Astrid waits a moment and then risks one last look at the beach. She sees Savage returning to his boat.  Wasting no more time, she runs off to warn Hiccup.
INT. HADDOCK HOUSE - NIGHT
Astrid slams the door open, obviously in a huff and not caring of the loud noise she's made late in the night.
Hiccup is still, despite the noise, sleeping soundly on a shark-skin futon of sorts on the first floor ground, Toothless curled up in sleep beside him.
Toothless perks up, awakened when Astrid walks in, surprised to see her there so suddenly. But Astrid pays no heed and walks up to Hiccup's sleeping form, kicking him in the back harshly.
ASTRID
Wake up!
HICCUP
Ow, what-!
He turns over to see Astrid.
HICCUP (CONTINUED)
Why would you do that? What are you doing?
ASTRID
Saving our butts! I just saw Heather talking to Savage. She working with the Outcasts!
HICCUP
What? She's upstairs sleeping.
ASTRID
Oh yeah? Let's go find out.
In Hiccup's room, Heather is sneaking in through his window just in time to get back in the bed.
As Hiccup and Astrid come up the stairs, Heather is already sleeping soundly, much to Astrid's confusion and Hiccup's annoyance.
HEATHER
(innocently yawning)
Hey guys. Is everything okay?
HICCUP
Yes Heather.
He turns to Astrid, looking at her with worry.
HICCUP (CONTINUED)
Everything's fine....
EXT. HADDOCK HOUSE - NIGHT
Astrid proceeds to storm out of the house, but Hiccup follows behind her.
HICCUP
Astrid, don't you think it's possible you saw something else? I mean it's pretty dark out there.
ASTRID
(desperate)
I know what I saw. The girl is not who you think she is!
HICCUP
So who is she, then?
ASTRID
I-I don't know....nobody knows. She just mysteriously washed up on our beach...you don't find that strange?
HICCUP
No, because her ship was taken over by pirates. Her whole island is under siege.
ASTRID
(growing angry)
The only thing under siege is your brain. You're not thinking clearly.
HICCUP
(offended)
Oh really, me?
ASTRID
(maddened)
Hiccup, the Outcasts could be attacking any minute!
HICCUP
Astrid, if there's one thing I know it's this: Heather...is not working for the Outcasts.
EXT. OUTCAST ISLAND - NIGHT
On Outcasts Island the Outcasts have made their own crude version of Berk's Kill Ring (though using wooden sticks to bind off the top rather than chains).
They have a nightmare in captive and it's putting up quite a fight to break free from the bindings. In natural defense, of course, it sets itself on fire.
ALVIN
Interesting.....There's really no rhyme or reason to that thing, is there? Just catches fire at will?
SAVAGE
That's why we need the book! She says everything the boy knows is documented in it's pages.
(laughing)
If we have it we can control any dragon.
ALVIN
Eh? Then why aren't I holding this book in me hand?
SAVAGE
You will be.
ALVIN
Good! Because your life depends on it....
Alvin proceeds to walk away, leaving Savage looking a bit scared, yet not surprised.
SAVAGE
I hate it when he says that....
On cue, another blast from the angry nightmare shots behind him.
INT. HADDOCK HOUSE - DAY
Stoick is putting away potatoes in a bag.
HICCUP
Hey Dad, have you seen the book?
STOICK
You'll have to be more specific, son.
HICCUP
The Book of Dragons....I can't find it anywhere-
Astrid slams the door open once again, looking more worried than angry this time.
ASTRID
She's gone!
HICCUP
Heather?
ASTRID
No, Stormfly! Little Miss Innocent stole my dragon!
Hiccup regards her words slowly before angry and regret wash over his features.
EXT. DRAGON TRAINING ACADEMY - DAY
All of the dragons and riders have joined outside the Academy as they ready to take off, all of them checking the saddles.
FISHLEGS
Oh this is bad, this is bad, this is bad, this is bad. This is catastrophic. I-If Alvin gets that book-!
HICCUP
He won't.
(more to himself)
Heather...I can't believe it....
SNOTLOUT
Me either. How could she walk away from-
(gesturing to himself)
-this?
HICCUP
How could I not have seen it?
TUFFNUT
Because your brain was "under siege".
HICCUP
Do you even know what that means?
TUFFNUT
Yes...no....it's not good right?
ASTRID
(bitter)
No, it's not good.
Astrid climbs onto Toothless, obviously not having her own dragon to ride.
HICCUP
(apologetically)
Astrid look....
ASTRID
(dismissive)
Save it! You can apologize when you get me my dragon back.
HICCUP
Alright let's go!
He proceeds to climb onto Toothless in front of Astrid.
HICCUP (CONTINUED)
We can't let her reach Outcast Island!
EXT. NORTH SEA - DUSK
Over the North Sea Heather is flying away on Stormfly, though it's not proving to be as easy as she anticipated. Stormfly's jerking and Heather's inability to control her makes it quite a bumpy ride.
HEATHER
Whoa,whoa - E-easy girl! Whoa...!
Meanwhile just a little behind Heather the teens are flying to catch up to her.
ASTRID
We're never gonna catch them! Stormfly is too fast!
HICCUP
When you're riding her, definitely. Not with a stranger.
Snotlout looks forwards and sees something in the distance.
SNOTLOUT
What's that? Up ahead!
HICCUP
It's Heather. And is she ever gonna be sorry she helped me with Toothless's speed.
Hiccup puts Toothless's tail into the correct position before they accelerate right next to Heather and Stormfly.
Heather sees that she's be caught and grows desperate.
HICCUP
(to Astrid)
I'll get you in close.
As noted, they try to fly in as close as they can next to Stormfly short of hitting her wings with Toothless's.
Still growing desperate in the impending air of getting caught, Heather pulls another chicken leg out of her bag, feeding it quickly to Stormfly.
HICCUP
I-is that chicken? Is that what you've been-?
ASTRID
(annoyed)
Really? You wanna talk about that now?
Stormfly's energy boast gives Toothless a run for his money as they both engage in a chase across the water, Stormfly gaining wind just slightly over them.
HICCUP
(to Astrid)
I'm gonna pull right above her!
As said, Hiccup, Toothless, and Astrid pull up further into the sky before leveling out high above Stormfly and Heather before diving down to a feet of of them.
ASTRID
O-okay, okay...hold him steady.
Astrid jumps off of Toothless and lands on Stormfly's saddle right behind Heather.
ASTRID
Going somewhere?
Heather gives Astrid a glower before bumping her backwards. Astrid tumbles down Stormfly's back before grabbing onto her tail.
ASTRID
Stormfly! Tail flip!
Listening to her rider, Stormfly flips her tail up and flipping Astrid with it. Astrid lands right back behind Heather on the saddle in which she holds Heather into a tight neckhold, putting her fist up next to her head.
TUFFNUT
This is gonna be awesome!
On the back of Stormfly the girls continue to fight rather cat-like, both trying to get hold of the front of the saddle.
Fishlegs surveys the fight quietly before looking ahead to see Outcast Island quickly approaching.
FISHLEGS
Uh, Hiccup. I really hate to be the voice of doom, but we just crossed into Outcast waters.
HICCUP
Hey, Astrid! You....might wanna move this along.
Astrid and Heather are still fighting on the back of Stormfly, and Astrid has seemed to have gotten Heather under her grasp at the moment.
ASTRID
(strained)
Give me a minute! She's stronger than she looks!
To emphasize Astrid's words, Heather rams her hand up into Astrid's chin, jarring her head back.
On Outcast Island, the Outcasts see the band of dragons flying towards their island. But they're already set and prepared with flaming catapults awaiting them.
Among them is Savage, who's smiling in success.
OUTCAST
Incoming! Fire!
They commence with shooting flaming boulders at the riders, which Hiccup is able to dodge skillfully, but still at a close call.
HICCUP
(worried)
Uh...Astrid
But Astrid's preoccupied. Still on the back of Stormfly, Heather has managed to pin Astrid down into a tight choke hold, trying to choke Astrid for what it's worth. Astrid's breathing becomes strained before she's able to gain her barrings and sits up, Heather's arms still around her neck.
She wiggles in her grasp violently to break free.
ASTRID
Don't you ever....touch...my dragon...again!
Finally getting Heather's arms off her neck, Astrid is able to get in one get jab at her side, forcing Heather off of Stormfly, but falling off towards the water, with the Book of Dragons falling off as well.
Astrid turns quickly to catch Heather but fails to do so.
HEATHER
Ah! No!
SNOTLOUT
I'm going after the girl!
HICCUP
(coldly)
I'm going after the book!
Heather still falls, drawing closer to the water.
HEATHER
Ah!!!
Very close to impact, though, Snotlout is able to catch her.
SNOTLOUT
Gotcha!
(slyly)
Knew you couldn't stay away.
Meanwhile, Hiccup and Toothless are flying in close to Outcast island, the book tumbling to it's shores quickly.
HICCUP
Come on bud...we need to get that book!
The Book falls closer and closer to the Outcast's shores, and it just doesn't seem like they'll be fast enough to catch it. Still, they chase after it desperately.
HICCUP
Come on! Come on, come on, come on, come on, bud!
Just before they're about to grab the book a flaming boulder comes into Hiccup's vision and he's forced to pull away in order to get out un-burned.
HICCUP
No!
The book continued to fall onto Outcast Island, out of sight, but Hiccup and Toothless fly down in a useless, desperate attempt, only for Hiccup's arm to get burned by an oncoming boulder that flies passed them by just a hair.
Savage smiles in satisfaction and the Outcasts cheer as the riders retreat with Heather in tow.
As Hiccup pulls up in formation with the rest of them, all the riders give him a somber look, knowing they've lost.
FISHLEGS
Please tell me you got it.
Hiccup shakes his head, looking burdened and guilty as he holds his injured shoulder.
HICCUP
I was too late.....Alvin has the Book of Dragons.....
Cut to black.
"To Be Continued..."
