Astrid Hofferson

The toughest Viking teen who lives on Berk. Her impressive fighting ability and lean form make her very desirable yet hard to impress, but Hiccup snags her as his eventual mutual love interest anyways. She is often Hiccup's main supporter and becomes second in authority to Dragon training related matters.

Role in the Franchise:
~ In "How to Train Your Dragon"

She’s considered to be the teenage embodiment of everything Viking so, obviously, she doesn’t think too highly of Hiccup in the first movie, and becomes extremely jealous and suspicious of Hiccup when he suddenly becomes "better" than her in dragon training.

Even though Astrid is very rooted in her beliefs in the Viking way, she is the first to turn over a new leaf in befriending dragons when she is taken on a flight with Toothless and Hiccup. After that, she becomes Hiccup’s partner in crime, actively protecting him and backing him up as he tries to change the Viking’s minds about Toothless and while he fights the Red Death.

~ In "Gift of the Night Fury" and "Riders of Berk"

After the events of the  first movie, Astrid retains her relationship and friendship with Hiccup and becomes his main human friend and supporter, actively joining him on most of his adventures and supporting him and his ideas when needed. She is said to be the second in command of the training facility Hiccup creates in Riders of Berk and is prepared to take over Hiccup's role as leader if needed.
Her dragon is the Deadly Nadder she rode in the fight against the Red Death in the movie, and afterwards it’s confirmed that she has named the dragon Stormfly. In Gift of the Night Fury Astrid and Stormfly are seen to be very close.

In
Riders of Berk Astrid and Stormfly are a seamless pair, training beyond anyone else and are close to par with Hiccup and Toothless's level of precision, speed, and communication despite being considered one of the slower dragons.
Astrid, too, is an only child, and not much is known about her family. The creators, Chris Sanders, and Dean DeBlois, did mention that they had a complete back story to Astrid as to why she was so invested in being the best, so with the expansion of the franchise Astrid’s story might finally come to the forefront, and it's said by show director that Astrid's home life will be covered in season two of Riders of Berk as some of her relatives will show up.
Astrid finds a romantic rival for Hiccup's affections in Heather in the Riders of Berk episode Heather Report, part 1 and 2 and earns her first starring role in those two episode as she tries to warn her friends of Heather's betrayal and eventually goes on a dangerous mission alone to retrieve the Book of Dragons.

~ In "How to Train Your Dragon 2"

In the sequel, Astrid retains her status as Hiccup's closest human friend, and has become more active in being his "second command" as well as her own formidable dragon trainer and racer.

Personality:
~The Prideful yet not Boastful Perfectionist:

Astrid takes much pride in being the best, but that doesn’t mean you’ll find her basking in her glory for she’s always off training and practicing. Her perfectionist ways makes her a very sore loser and she refuses to put up with anyone she feels isn’t doing their part.

Even after her slight change of heart, she still isn't very tolerant of someone who harms more than helps in dragon training or tagging along on missions, as she stated to Hiccup in We are Family, Part 1 that Ruffnut and Tuffnut didn't have to come every time.

~Hard Personality Shattered:

Astrid’s otherwise hard and driven personality is somewhat softened after her flight with Toothless and her association with Hiccup. She seems calmer, less angry, more friendly, and open to trying out new things. This is highlighted in the short Gift of the Night Fury when she attempts to create new traditions for Snoggletog to “bury the sadness”. But, it's clear after the events of the movie that Astrid is lost in what to do with herself. All of her goals in dragon fighting change after the first movie, and the events in Gift of the Night Fury prove that Astrid has no idea what her new goals are. For the mean time, Astrid has seemed to have picked up Hiccup's "screwing up" trait and destroys half the village in an innocent attempt to spread cheer during Snoggletog when she unknowingly plants exploding eggs in people's houses.

It's also evident in the movie that when Astrid is taken out of her comfort zone, she's completely helpless. Such as when she was taken to the Dragon's Nest by Hiccup and Toothless she clings to Hiccup helplessly and the fear in her eyes is clear from the moment she gets on Toothless.

Astrid's also seemed to cool down in terms of her previous need to always be the best at winning more Viking-based activities, which is shown in the episode Thawfest. Astrid was even off-put by Hiccup's over competitive nature and confessed that the fact that he was such a "gracious loser" was something she always liked about him.

~Selectively Comforting, Aggressively Physical:

It's also apparent that Astrid either rarely comforts people or simply doesn't know how. In both cases she's seen comforting Hiccup she always unintentionally says something that makes him feel worse before she makes him feel better. In Gift of the Night Fury, she resorts to simply using physical manners to comfort him when she kisses and hugs him. Her aggressive nature makes her, still, the only one to have initiated any of the physical romance that goes on between her and Hiccup.

Despite Astrid's somewhat cold personality to most of her peers, she is immediately softened and caring when it comes to Hiccup. After her flight on Toothless in the movie, Astrid exhibits many moments in comforting Hiccup that continues so show in Gift of the Night Fury and Riders of Berk. Still in moments when her romantic feelings for Hiccup are called to attention, it's seems to be the only thing that genuinely makes Astrid nervous/awkward. Usually, she falls back on punching Hiccup's arm to restore normality to the situation (which in the books punching is said to be "the equivalent to big bear hug") that she also described in Heather Report, Part 1 that her punching is "communication".

In later episodes of Riders of Berk Astrid's slight awkwardness about the subject of her and Hiccup's slightly more romantic side wears off, and she becomes more openly caring for him to where it's almost second nature.

Because of her closeness with Hiccup, she's seemed to have sparked a close friendship with Fishlegs as well. Though their relationship is more protective and sibling-like, it's show in Gem of a Different Color that Astrid is quick to beat up anyone who messes with Fishlegs (though she's not slow to beat him up herself if she feels necessary).

~Easily Suspicious:

She’s very observant of the habits and statuses of the people around her even though she claims to “not care what people do”, and can easily become obsessive with finding out something she feels is being kept from her or when she simply doesn't understand something or someone (i.e: Hiccup).

Astrid is also extremely distrusting of newcomers--unlike Hiccup--not giving out trust until it is earned towards everyone. This is mostly exhibited when Heather comes to Berk in the episode Heather Report, Part 1, even though people didn't believe Astrid's pleas that Heather was working for the Outcasts, her seemingly paranoia induced behavior was all accurate. She did eventually learn that while Heather was betraying them, the girl really did need to do so to get her parents back from Alvin, and Astrid selflessly risked her life to get Heather's parents back despite their differences.

Abilities:
~Axe Wielding:

Astrid is a skilled fighter and is best at wielding the double sided axe her mother gave her. She’s seen target practicing with her axe in the movie and in Riders of Berk by throwing the axe against numerous spots on different trees in Raven Point Forest. Since Astrid is a perfectionist and is rarely okay with anyone being better than her at something, it’s safe to assume she’s mostly good at everything she tries, and if she’s not good at it from the start, Astrid will practice long and hard it until she gets it, though she's getting better at not being too overly competitive as shown in Riders of Berk.
~(Lack of) Cooking Skills:

One of Astrid’s more humorous “disabilities” is her lack of cooking skills. In Gift of the Night Fury Astrid attempted to make a drink called “Yaknog” for Snoggletog but it ended up tasting utterly disgusting to everyone she gave it to. She was blissfully unaware of how gross her drink was, though.

~(Lack of) Acting Skills:

As well as the fact that she doesn't seem to have much acting skills either. As shown in Heather Report, part 2 when Astrid had to dress up as Heather and sneak onto Outcast Island to portray her, her acting skills were pretty dreadful, luckily none of the Outcasts were able to pot the difference, though.

Appearance:
Unlike most of the Viking women on Berk, Astrid has a slim figure and isn’t—visibly—very muscular, Creator Chris Sanders even mentioned that Astrid was modeled to look like a “California volley ball player” rather than a full figured Viking woman. She has blonde hair and blue eyes and her hair is usually done in a braided ponytail with strands of hair on the sides of her face and bangs covering her left eye. She’s always seen in a tight, blue, knitted tunic, a spiked, red, leather skirt with small skulls around the waistline, wrapped arm bands, dark blue leggings, fur boots, spiked, metal shoulder pads, and a leather headband. Astrid’s age isn’t confirmed, but she is believed to be older the Hiccup because she’s noticeably taller than him. She’s also the only character who is never seen wearing a horned Viking helmet. Although Hiccup doesn’t always wear his helmet, he does own one, Astrid, on the other hand, is never seen to even own a helmet.

In the Sequel, Astrid is seen donning similar clothing, though more fit for winter. She wears a brown/red tunic instead of blue, has fur arm bands, and rather large fur hood, as well as twisted side pony-tail than her normal hair-do.

  1. Do you have a source for the comment Chris Sanders made about Astrid being modeled after a volleyball player?
